Cape Town vs Jozi — two lifestyle markets, one strategy

Reading two very different South African audiences without losing brand consistency.

We run campaigns out of Johannesburg and Cape Town every month, and the two markets almost never respond the same way to an identical brief. Treating South Africa as one media landscape is the fastest way to get flat coverage in both cities.

Two audiences, two rhythms

Johannesburg reads business. Editors, buyers and creators here want the founder story, the growth numbers, the retail footprint. Coverage travels through trade press, business dailies and commerce-driven creators, and it moves quickly — a news cycle here is measured in days, not weeks.

Cape Town reads craft. The same launch needs a slower, more considered narrative: the maker, the material, the aesthetic reference. Coverage lands in long-lead lifestyle titles, design press and creators who build their audiences around taste rather than turnover.

What transfers between the two

  • Brand identity, tone of voice and visual system — these have to stay consistent or the brand fractures.
  • Pricing, product specification and stockist information.
  • Founder quotes, when they’re re-angled for the local editorial lens.

What needs a local rewrite

  • Press notes and pitch angles.
  • Creator lists and seeding packages.
  • Event formats, guest lists and run-of-show.
  • Retail and hospitality partners for launch moments.

How we plan it

Every national campaign we run starts with a shared brand core and two market-specific activation plans built underneath it. The core protects the brand; the local layer makes sure the work actually lands. Skipping the second half is the single most common reason a national launch feels strong in one city and invisible in the other.
